Morning: the square and the small details

Enter the old town, pause in Piazza San Valentino and visit the church if it is open. Continue towards Palazzo Orsini, looking at the exterior and nearby sculptures. With children, searching for a carved symbol can be more engaging than a long explanation outside the building.

If the nativity display opens during this part of the day, include it now. Otherwise, continue to Porta Novella and return after lunch. Leave a little room between visits, particularly if anyone walks slowly or wants to take photographs.
